The Number of the End
First thought when you read the title? For most of us it was probably 666. However this study will be looking at another number, coming not from the New Testament, but the Old.
The prophet Daniel was taken to the bank of a river and told things concerning the end of the age. In that telling there were a number of numbers. Our interest is in the final number given to him.
5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. 6 One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?”
7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time.[a] When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”
8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?”
9 He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end.
10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.
12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.
13 “As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.” (Daniel 12:5-13)
Any idea what this all means?
Looking at the situation:
Daniel was one of the captives carried away during the Babylonian Captivity, which happened as a punishment to Israel for her sins and as a warning of a greater defeat and dispersion of the people if they and subsequent generations continued in their sins.
Unfortunately, Israel as a nation did not learn her lesson resulting in the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple and the scattering of the Jewish people among all the nations of the earth. During that time a series of nations occupied and controlled the Holy Land.
Daniel, as one of God’s prophets was told about this many years in advance of it’s happening. In that revelation he was given a selection of numbers, each having a specific meaning.
The number that interests us and what it means is the last number given to him, the number 1335.
This is the number that signifies the end of the occupation of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. It is the number of restoration.
Interestingly enough this number began appearing in the Middle East on coins and other items, starting first in Egypt, the place where General Allenby began the campaign that would drive the Ottoman Empire out of the Holy Land, thus ending the occupation of the Holy Land.
The number appeared all over the Islamic world because it was 1335 from the rise of Islam.
It all converged in 1917, the Year of the Jubilee, the year the restoration of the land to the people of Israel would begin.
Looking at the playing out of the Biblical template:
1335 was the number given to the Jewish people to speak of the end of foreign occupation of their land. In God’s providence and ability to take what man does and work His will out of it 1917 was the year marked as 1335 in the Islamic calendar.
To look at another number, the number 7 in the Bible typically signifies completion, while 8 signifies a new beginning.
The Ottoman Empire came into possession of the land of Israel in 1517. The gave up possession of it in 1917, four hundred years, or 8 Jubilee cycles later. The process of returning the land to the Jewish people had taken a giant step forward.
