The Seventy Year Mystery

After 70 years in Babylon came the return of the Jewish people to their own land.

The Biblical record of it:

22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia—in order to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah—the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he sent a proclamation throughout his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,

23 “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all His people, may the Lord his God be with him, and let him go up!’” (II Chronicles 36:22-23)

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he sent a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying:

2 “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. (Ezra 1:1-2)

The prophecy referred to:

11 This whole land will be a desolation and a horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

12 ‘Then it will be when seventy years are completed I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,’ declares the Lord, ‘for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it an everlasting desolation. (Jeremiah 25:11-12)

10 For thus says the Lord, ‘When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.

Jeremiah 29:10

In the modern case: What happened after 70 years?

Obvious question: Seventy years from what? Seventy years from the establishment of Israel as a nation in the modern world.

Comparing Ancient and Modern Cases

In the ancient case:  A world leader, Cyrus, recognized and affirmed Israel’s right to the city of Jerusalem

A modern parallel: A world leader, Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, recognized and affirmed Israel’s right to the city of Jerusalem.

Remembering what was involved when the United Nations passed the Partition Plan:

“A double edged sword”

On one hand: It gave Israel a homeland.

On the other: It cut Israel off from it’s Holy City

This would end to a certain extent in 1967, when Israel in the Six Day War took the Temple Mount

It would end fully in 2017 when President Donald Trump recognized and affirmed Israel’s right to Jerusalem, publicly proclaiming it and moving the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

A detail that only God could orchestrate:

The Partition Plan, cutting Israel off from Jerusalem and the proclamation recognizing and restoring Israel’s right to Jerusalm both took place on the same date in the Jewish calendar, the 18 of Kislev.

The House of Return

The role of Isaiah in seeing and speaking of Cyrus as God’s instrument in the restoration of Israel:

24 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb,

I, the Lord, am the maker of all things, stretching out the heavens by Myself
and spreading out the earth all alone,

25 Causing the omens of boasters to fail, making fools out of diviners, causing wise men to draw back and turning their knowledge into foolishness,

25 Confirming the word of His servant and performing the purpose of His messengers.
It is I who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited!’ And of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built.’ And I will raise up her ruins again.

27 It is I who says to the depth of the sea, ‘Be dried up!’ And I will make your rivers dry.

28 It is I who says of Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.’
And he declares of Jerusalem, ‘She will be built,’ And of the temple, ‘Your foundation will be laid.’”

45 Thus says the Lord to Cyrus His anointed, whom I have taken by the right hand,
To subdue nations before him
and to loose the loins of kings; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut:

2 “I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars.

3 “I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden wealth of secret places,
So that you may know that it is I,
the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.

“For the sake of Jacob My servant, and Israel My chosen one, I have also called you by your name; I have given you a title of honor though you have not known Me.

5 “I am the Lord, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God.

I will gird you, though you have not known Me;

6 That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other,
7 The One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these.

Isaiah 44:24- 45:7

Was there affirmation of either Truman’s or Trump’s roles in the restoration of Israel?

Truman: By a visit from the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem

Trump: By a visit from Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu

What the Cyrus Proclamation declared:

1. The recognition of Israel as a Nation

2. The right of Israel to Jerusalem

Truman’s role in the modern parallel: The recognition of Israel as a Nation

Trump’s role in the modern parallel: The right of Israel to Jerusalem

Details orchestrated by God:

The Cyrus Declaration dealt with Israel returning to her land and establishing a building in Jerusalem

The Truman Declaration dealt with Israel returning to her land

The Trump Declaration dealt with establishing a building in Jerusalem

The date of Israel’s rebirth and the Truman Declaration – May 14, 1948

The date of the opening of the new embassy in Jerusalem – May 14, 2018

(Note the 70 years)

A thought provoking question: Could the establishing of a house in Jerusalem (the United States Embassy) be a foreshadowing of the establishment of the Temple at some future date?
