The Return of the Persian

The Nation of Israel was sent into exile twice.
First time: 605 BC
To: Babylon
Lasted: 70 years
Second time: 72 AD
To: The ends of the earth (See Deuteronomy 28:64)
Lasted: Until 1948 AD

The king in the ancient world who decreed their return:

Cyrus, King of Persia

(the Medo-Persian Empire had conquered the Babylonian Empire – see Daniel, Chapter 5)

The replaying of this king in the modern world:

The first time by: President Harry Truman

How? By the role he played in seeing that the United Nations established and recognized the Nation of Israel

The second time by: President Donald Trump

How? By officially recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital and moving the United States Embassy to a location in that city

An interesting question:

Could the one American Cyrus have led to the next in the same way that one Jubilee leads to the next?

Taking a look at this question:

Donald Trump was born June 14, 1946, during the presidency of Harry Truman, the first American Cyrus (at the time when Truman was engaged in a Cyrus type task of working to open the way for Jewish exiles (primarily from World War II) to be able to emigrate to Israel and also setting events in motion that would lead to the reestablishing of Israel as an independent nation.

A look at the two men:

Truman: A lifelong student of the Scriptures. This is what led to his passion and commitment to establishing a homeland for the Jewish people

Trump: Has been described as “Not the most likely person to fulfill a Biblical calling”

Some things he had in common with Cyrus:

Thus says the Lord to Cyrus His anointed, Whom I have taken by the right hand,
To subdue nations before him and to loose the loins of kings;
To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut:

2 “I will go before you and make the rough places smooth;
I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars.

3 “I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden wealth of secret places,
So that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.

4 “For the sake of Jacob My servant, and Israel My chosen one,
I have also called you by your name; I have given you a title of honor
Though you have not known Me.

5 “I am the Lord, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God.
I will gird you, though you have not known Me;

6 That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other, Isaiah 45:1-6

The words of Cyrus coming from Trump on ancient Persia’s New Year’s Day (March 22, 2017):

Cyrus the Great, a leader of the ancient Persian Empire, famously said that “[f]reedom, dignity, and wealth together constitute the greatest happiness of humanity.

Scripture binding the two men together: Ezra 1:1-4

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he sent a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying:

2 “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

3 Whoever there is among you of all His people, may his God be with him! Let him go up to Jerusalem which is in Judah and rebuild the house of the Lord, the God of Israel; He is the God who is in Jerusalem.

4 Every survivor, at whatever place he may live, let the men of that place support him with silver and gold, with goods and cattle, together with a freewill offering for the house of God which is in Jerusalem.’”

When this took place in Cyrus’ time in office: “In the first year”

(verse 1)
When the Jerusalem Declaration took place in Trump’s time in office: In his first year in office

How the proclamation went out: In both cases first by a spoken proclamation and then in writing

Notice what Cyrus’ proclamation spoke of:
Not only of the return of the Jewish people to their land, but also of their sovereignty over the city of Jerusalem

Digging a little deeper into Ezra 1

The word by Jeremiah that he mentions: – Jeremiah 29:10

“For thus says the Lord, ‘When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.”

The significance of the “seventieth year”

Time frame for the Nation of Israel to be restored in the ancient times.

Cyrus came to power after a period of seventy years.
Life span of Cyrus: 70 years
Trump’s age when he became president: 70
His proclamation came 70 years after Israel had been restored.

And it all came together in the Year of the Jubilee.

Next week: Some details concerning the significance of trumpets
