In the law of the Jubilee
The people return to the land
and the land returns to the people
Viewing this on a national, secular scale:
Whoever occupies the land must relinquish control
Remembering what had happened to the land of Israel:
It has been called
“the most fought over piece of real estate on the face of the earth”
One nation after another had claimed it until by 1867 it was part of the Ottoman Empire, an Islamic power that was not about to relinquish anything to the Jewish people
However God is bigger than any empire or world power and the Law of the Jubilee that He had established for the nation of Israel cannot be thwarted
The mystery of the Jubilee is that the land will return to its rightful owner and sometimes God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. One of the lessons of Scripture is that God can take even the evil that people do and use it to bring about His good. In this case it began with a Church fight.
The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem was shared by the Greek Orthodox and Latin (Roman Catholic) Churches. There was a dispute over a metal star in the sanctuary among other things as to whether the inscription should be in Greek or in Latin. (apparently the church leaders were of the opinion that the language on the star would determine who was ultimately in charge) The Russian government sided with the Orthodox Church while France, Britain, Sardinia and the Ottoman Empire sided with the Catholic Church.
This would lead to the Crimean War (1853 –1856)
(setting of the poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade)
This war so bankrupted the Ottoman Empire that they began to do something that they had never done before: Two years after the war ended they initiated the Ottoman Land code and began to register and tax all land. Under this and earlier laws no land could be sold to foreigners, those who were not part of the Empire
This would mean that all land would be owned by Moslems.
Nine years later, finding that this was not sufficient a new Ottoman Land Code was enacted. Under the provisions of this law the land could now be purchased by foreigners.
The effect of this law would be almost unnoticed at first, but in time it would change the history of the Middle East and the modern world.
Jewish people, some of them working through third parties began buying the land back. Thus fulfilling one of the principles of the Law of the Jubilee, that those who possess the land would relinquish it to the original owners.
Looking to the Scripture:
This was prophesied by at least 2 of the Old Testament Prophets:
It will no longer be said to you, “Forsaken,”
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “Desolate”;
But you will be called, “My delight is in her,”
And your land, “Married”;
For the Lord delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married. (Isaiah 62:4)
44 Men will buy fields for money, sign and seal deeds, and call in witnesses in the land of Benjamin, in the environs of Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland and in the cities of the Negev; for I will restore their fortunes,’ declares the Lord.”(Jeremiah 32:44)
The timing of the land’s release began in 1867, the year of the visit of both “The Stranger” and “The Man with the Measuring Line”
God’s hand was at work, preparing the way for the return of the Jewish People as a nation.
