April 2025

April 2025

SUPER SENIORS—TO THE MOON AND BEYOND!!

The Super Seniors had their annual planning breakfast on March 13th at Eat n Park, with 38 people attending. It is always a fun time with great food, service and fellowship. The first activity will be us “trying again” to have Mr. Donald Freeburn with his NASA presentation on May 2nd at 6:00 p.m. at the Fellowship Center. There will be a pot-luck dinner, with the group supplying the fried chicken and drink. Deadline to sign up is April 27th. Then on Thursday July 10th we will be touring Phipps Conservatory at 2:30 and then boarding the Gateway Clipper at 6:15 for a barbecue lock and dam dinner cruise. We will be chartering a 38-passenger bus with Mlakers, so sign up early for this one!! On Thursday Oct 2nd, we will be going to the Elk Country Visitors Center in Benezette, Pa. We will be taking a wagon ride to view the elk, then having a buffet dinner afterwards. We will also make a few stops around the county to view more elk—Lord willing!! This trip will also be with Mlaker’s on a 38-passenger bus. Our last event of the year will be to Old Bedford Village on Saturday December 6th for their Old-Fashioned Christmas tour. We will travel there by church van and or individual cars.

And, as always, we will hold our annual Strawberry Social on Friday June 20th at the Fellowship Center. This is always fun with wonderful fellowship. Make sure you mark your calendars to join us in all this fun!!

There will be a Spaghetti Lunch on Sunday April 27, 2025, at the Fellowship Center to Benefit Amber (Peck) Johnson. To get the word out, please “share” the Face Book ad when posted and feel free to take a poster from the table in the hallway to hang in businesses.  Watch the bulletin for more details.

Flea Market, Perennial & Bake Sale

It’s that time again for the annual Kingwood Church of God Flea Market, Perennial and Bake Sale at the Fellowship Center.  Time to clean out your attics, closets and garages and purge those unused items! 🙂 We will have “Church Tables” and welcome all donations of new or clean, gently used items- including housewares, clothes, shoes, toys, etc. Please place any donated items in church library or nurses’ office at Fellowship Center before May 7th so we have time to price and organize.

We will also take perennial plant donations. Plants need to be potted and labeled if you know what they are and placed in front of Fellowship Center by Wednesday before sale so they can be priced.  Anyone who needs pots, let Amy Moore or Debbie Ogline know. We have many pots in building behind the Fellowship Center.

The Flea Market will be held 2 days again; Friday, May 9th 9am-3pm and Saturday, May 10th 8am-1pm. Individuals may rent a 8′ table for $10 for one day or $15 for both days. Please give money and table reservation to Georgiann Knepper (814-926-2253). Set up will be Wednesday and the Thursday before the sale. Tables in the gym are first come, first serve then availability will extend to hallways and outside, if desired.

On Friday, there will be a limited lunch menu and a Bake sale on Saturday. Donation of Baked Goods will be needed.

This is a great opportunity for fundraising groups to get creative and sell things at a table or two! Spread the word to anyone you know who would like to have a place to sell their garage sell items, or crafts.

Watch the bulletin for more details on the Flea Market and Bake Sale as the date draws nearer. Also, as advertisements appear on KCG Facebook page, please share!!! It’s our best source of advertisement.

Church Mouse

March. March seems like one of those in between months.  In between winter and spring. In between Epiphany and Lent on the church calendar. In between the activity of the Christmas season and the flurry of Spring and new life. I am seeing bulbs shoot up new growth and then seeing that new growth watered by snow showers. Ah March.

Early in the month, I stowed away with a few persons to check out the Maple taste and tour.  So many places, making so many delicious and sweet treats.  I do love sugary goodies. PW and Beth had some visitors from Ohio come in for the tour. It was a very interesting way to start the month.

I also sneaked down to the basement of the church to listen in on the 5 Year plan annual review.  There are some people with some amazing ideas for the future of the church and where we go from where we are.  A committee is planning on some major renovations in the basement to make it more appealing.  I also heard that council is going to have a congregational meeting to approve parking lot paving. That will make it nicer for me to ride my little mousey skateboard.

Speaking of “a peeling” I understand there is potato peeling coming up soon for the Buckwheat supper. I might have to get down to the FC to see if there are any scraps around for a little mouse. And thinking about scraps, I had a wonderful time picking up crumbs after the Wild Game Dinner.  There were a lot of people in the FC eating a lot of my friends. But I stuck to the dessert crumbs. Everyone seemed to have a great time. I enjoyed the talk by the speaker Brian Whipkey.  I especially liked the video of that huge fish being pulled out of the iced over lake.

The church has a new part time Director of Children’s Ministry.  Hillary Whaley has come on staff in this role and she is just brimming with new ideas.  One of the changes is that there will be Jr. Church provided at both services.   Another change is that the first Sunday of each month the kiddos will be in service with their parents.  It is exciting to see things being planned for the kids and their parents.

I had the chance to observe the Ash Wednesday service on the 5th.  It was a very nice service of repenting and remembering. I never thought about burning the palms from that last Palm Sunday to make the ashes.  I never thought about that in the way that PW described it.  Our symbol of triumph from Palm Sunday last year became the symbol of our repentance for our failings over the year.

Well, we are firmly in the Lenten Season and I for one am looking forward to Easter.  But first I am looking forward to hearing the youth this Sunday as they lead in worship.

Well, I think that might be all for now.
Until next time.
As always yours, The Church Mouse

Youth and Young Adult Updates

First and foremost, a big thank you to everyone who was a part of Youth Sunday. This includes all of the youth, the parents, and members of the congregation! It is such an amazing opportunity for our young people to take what they are learning and share it. Their interests are as unique as they are, and it is always wonderful to watch them study Scripture. A special shout out to Beth Miller, who made it possible for me to be upstairs while she handled getting breakfast prepared for the teens.

April is often a full month, especially with Easter Sunday right around the corner. The schedule for youth and young adult events are:

Sunday, 4/6 Young Adult Meet up @ Starbucks 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday, 4/9 Youth and Young Adults help pack Easter Eggs for Community East Egg Hunt (@ Fellowship Center) 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, 4/16Youth Group @ Fellowship Center 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, 4/19 Youth and Young Adults help hide Easter Eggs @ Fellowship Center 8:00 a.m.

Wednesday, 4/23Youth Group @ Fellowship Center 7:00 p.m.

Sunday, 4/27Young Adult Meet up @ Starbucks 6:00 p.m.

April’s Service Focus for the Young Adults and Youth will be the Easter Egg hunt at the Fellowship Center on April 19th @10:00 a.m. Not only will students and YA be invited to help stuff and hide eggs, but also to stay and help during the event. We appreciate everyone who helped donate laundry detergent during the months of February and March – you are all rock stars!

Please see the special summer camp announcement in this month’s Contact to help get your student ready for this June! Also, all weeks are still looking for wonderful staff! If you are interested in applying to be a counselor for summer camp, please see Karey Vough for the link Camp Sonrise Mountain uses to apply online. So many young people make a commitment or reaffirm their faith at camp, adults that love God are such an important part of that moment.

Have a blessed month,
Pastor Karey

Youth News

This month marks the start of a new program for young adults, age 18-25. Twice a month we will meet at Dunkin’ Donuts in Somerset @ 6:00pm to share our week, yummy hot drinks, and pray for each other. This is the perfect hang out for those who attend Kingwood or those who have questions about faith. Any young adult is welcome to come and enjoy the time together. Questions can be text to Pastor Karey at 814-969-2817. If we ever need to cancel, especially with the winter weather, a call will be put out on the phone tree.

This month the youth group will be collecting bottles of laundry detergent for the Rockwood Area School District Student Resource Room. For those who do not know, there is a washer and dryer on site at the school. This allows students to have access to clean clothing and for donated items to be washed before students receive them. Detergent can be any size or brand, but would ask that it is fragrance free so any student can use it. There will be a marked box near the coat rack for detergent donations. Thank you for supporting the students in our local community!

Arctic Blast is right around the corner! Junior High Students will be at Camp Sonrise Mountain 2/7-2/9 for an amazing weekend of fun and time with God. Senior High will have their weekend 2/21-2/23. Students will arrive on Friday at 6:30pm and leave on Sunday at 3:00pm for both weekends. Keep your eye on the bulletin to see the code for Kingwood youth and guests to enter at the time of registration. Need a ride? Talk to Jake and Karey Vough.
